This Week: ReelShort Expands, Disney Buys Digital and Samsung Builds FAST
The Signal This Week

This week produced a mix of completed deals and useful early signals. ReelShort outlined two new businesses, Disney acquired a substantial amount of creator-led programming, and Samsung continued building both sides of its FAST operation.

ReelShort is building beyond its own app

Two ReelShort job postings disclosed businesses that have not yet been formally announced.

The company is establishing an outbound licensing operation for North America and Latin America. The planned rights menu includes finished programs, local remakes and format rights, along with co-production and revenue-sharing structures. ReelShort also intends to create territory pricing, windowing rules, rate cards and a formal rights-tracking system.

A second posting describes a zero-to-one AI companion and character-chat product. The proposed experience includes character personas, memory, safety controls, subscriptions and in-app purchases.

Both are businesses in development. Together with ReelShort’s third adaptation from Cora Reilly’s Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles, they show the company finding more ways to use the same story worlds: successive video adaptations, external licensing and interactive character experiences.

Disney adds more internet-native programming

Disney+ licensed 90 episodes from Gary Neville’s The Overlap: 40 episodes of Stick to Football and 50 episodes of the new Stick to United.

Disney+ and Hulu also acquired video editions of six iHeartMedia podcasts. The package begins with Hey Jonas! and will expand across recurring entertainment and talk titles.

These deals follow Disney’s agreement with TikTok to place curated fan-created videos inside the Verts feed on Disney+. The three moves cover sports, talk programming and short-form fandom, all sourced from audiences and formats developed outside traditional television.

Samsung works both sides of FAST

Samsung TV Plus expanded its European partnership with All3Media International, adding nine dedicated FAST channels across the UK, France and Spain.

It also renewed Hooligans: The ARCH Racing Project, featuring Keanu Reeves and Gard Hollinger, for a second season.

The two deals show the different requirements inside the same service. Samsung needs large, territory-ready catalogs to fill its channel lineup, while its original-programming operation needs producers capable of delivering returning series.

Video programming continues to move between platforms

Spotify has started distributing selected video podcasts through Twitch. Initial programming includes The Ringer’s Wise Guys.

Vice TV, meanwhile, licensed Animation+ Mixtape, a two-hour late-night block supplied by the creator-focused Animation+ FAST and AVOD service.

Both deals give digitally developed programming an additional distribution surface. They also create new licensing precedents for producers whose shows already have an audience and a repeatable release schedule.

Netflix adds live participation and AI-assisted animation

Netflix commissioned a 12-part live dating event from Initial and Workerbee. Netflix, Will You Marry Me? will run across four weeks, with members influencing the search for a participant’s partner.

A separate hiring signal shows Netflix’s INK team producing animated shorts and specials through a hybrid pipeline combining generative image and video tools with Maya, Houdini, Harmony, Blender and other conventional animation software.

The live commission is a confirmed order. The INK posting establishes active production, while leaving titles, release plans and outside partnerships unresolved.

Creator-led companies add capital and production infrastructure

WTSL made the first outside investment in Alex Cooper and Matt Kaplan’s Unwell at a reported $500 million pre-money valuation. Unwell says the capital will support acquisitions and expansion across podcasts, film and television, live events, agency services and consumer products.

Shortical is taking a different route. The platform is producing James Franco’s first microseries under SAG-AFTRA’s Verticals Agreement, combining recognizable screen talent with a dedicated union framework for vertical production.

That is the week: more rights infrastructure around vertical drama, more recurring digital programming entering major streaming services, and more platforms building distinct systems for commissioning, licensing and distribution.
